2010.02.28 Sunrise on Sorrows

Our Lady of Sorrows sits just East of Crown Center amongst the parking garages and office buildings. It is a remnant from an older, slower time in the midst of this fast paced area of the city.

Another piece by Donald Judd. I am still taken by the simple elegance of his work.

2010.02.26 Homework

Please consider this my excuse for being less than punctual recently with the 365 project.

2010.02.25 Kansas Sunset

I have driven by this field on K7 several times. But on this night, I had to stop.

2010.02.24 Four Architects

Hyatt Regency Crown Center, designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes is reflected in the glass of 2345 Grand, designed by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe. In which is housed a firm founded by Thomas Ellerbe and Welton Becket.

2010.02.23 Self Portrait

I had the wide angle out for a couple of landscape shots, so I walked around the house and aimed it at other things - including my ugly mug. As I have said before - with this lens you can see the back of your own head!

2010.02.22 Drive Home

The idea here is simple, and can render limitless abstract images. Set your camera to expose for four or five seconds. Point it out the front window while you are driving home at night - and bingo.

2010.02.21 Crabapple

I will be the first to admit that I am ready for the snow and ice and cold to be over. But, there is still beauty out there if you can keep your eyes from freezing shut.

2010.02.20 Inland Sea

Inland Sea is an Urban Winery located right here in Kansas City. Their passion for what they do is evident in both the wine that they make and they way that they speak about it. Hit their website and check them out at their tasting gallery in the west bottoms.

2010.02.19 Tanner's

The first Tanner's opened on 87th Street in Lenexa, Kansas, in 1985, with Grandpa Tanner and his friends building it from the ground up. From the very beginning, Tanner's Bar and Grill in Lenexa was a place where Johnson Countians from near and far traveled for an after-work drink and dinner, to watch the local boys earn another victory on TV.

2010.02.18 Mixed Vegetables

For most of us, mixed vegetables would indeed be considered an everyday object. The people in our community that depend on Harvesters, on the other hand, consider them to be most valuable - right along with all of the other food in the warehouse. I had the opportunity to serve at Harvesters this evening with the AIA Pillars Class. It is a very impressive organization that is impacting thousands of lives in the Kansas City Metro on a daily basis.

2010.02.17 Stone Sunrise

I can almost feel the stone waking up to the warmth of the sun after a long, cold winter night.

2010.02.16 My Bride

I have wanted to explore a backlit portrait for a while. I still don't have it down. Close. But just not quite there. Thanks for your patience, doll. I will give your eyes a chance to recover, but sometime we will have to try this again.

2010.02.15 Conscious Water

Concerning John 2:1-11, Alexander Pope wrote 'The conscious water, saw its master, and blushed.' Pope's words are worth a thousand pictures.

2010.02.14 Reflection

This shot is more about a method of processing a reflection image. I think there might be something to this. The simple idea is this. Find a subject where your eye can focus on both an object and a reflected object. Next, take two shots. One focused on each of the two scenes. Blend them together in Photoshop and focus on the most interesting parts of each image.

2010.02.13 Large Stack

The Nelson Atkins Museum has a couple of pieces by Donald Judd, a minimalist artist that is right at my speed. Simple. Clean. Architectural. This piece is called 'Large Stack'.

2010.02.12 The Light of Men

I have had this same verse burning in the back of my mind for weeks. We did a quick morning study on 'Lectio Divina' and this is one of the first portions of scripture that I applied it to. There is something deeper here than I can grab. Possibly deeper than my ability permits.

2010.02.11 Boulevard

This is another building that I drive past twice a day. I have been thinking about doing this shot since the last HDR post. I am still digging the surrealistic quality of HDR.

2010.02.10 Aidans Progress

Kelly and are are truly amazed at Aidan's progress with reading. It seems like yesterday that he was learning to talk and walk, and now he is reading words like calligraphy and pterodactyl. Seriously? Think back to your first grade books. See Spot run. See Jane run. Pterodactyl. Wow. Nice work buddy.

2010.02.09 Pumpkin Bread

You really never know what you will take a picture of when you get up in the morning. Today, it was Andrea Gray's pumpkin bread with cream cheese that she brought into the office for breakfast. She runs a blog called Through Hazel Eyes Design. Check it out. And get her to make you some of this pumpkin bread.

2010.02.08 Rosedale Park

On the way to work this morning, I saw tree after tree that was covered in this light, soft snow that fell last night. I had to take the opportunity to snap a pic of some of these. Rosedale park is an easy target as it is only two minutes off my commute.

2010.02.02 The Cathedral

Here is another spot that I will need to return to when there is no fog hanging low over the city. The gold on this spire is truly blinding in the sun - but you will just have to trust me on that for now.

2010.02.01 West Bottoms

I stumbled on this view while on a tour of HNTB Architecture with AIA Pillars. I guess what struck me was just how far you can see from this spot. The intent for the photo is to use the road and the lights from the cars to draw your eye to the horizon.
